Are You Bored… or Are You Coasting?

Last week I had a coaching conversation with one of my agents that made me think a lot, and there are a couple of questions I keep pondering.

This agent came to me and said, “I am just bored. I don’t know what’s missing. I am doing great, business is good, I am just bored.”

A couple things came to mind immediately. One is mastering the boredom of success.

No matter what field you are in, there are probably a few key habits and actions you must consistently take to be successful in your role. At first, there is excitement in learning those actions, getting better, and seeing results. But after you’ve been doing the work for a while, that excitement starts to wear off.

I like to call what happens next shiny object syndrome.

We start searching for the next thing. Often times, we quit doing the very things that made us successful in the first place, which is never good, or we simply add something new.

Maybe you change careers. Maybe you start looking for what’s wrong. Maybe you start questioning things that were working just fine. You’re constantly searching for something different. Guilty as charged, when I lose sight of vision, it’s not pretty. 🙂

For me, this conversation created an AHA. 🤔

I know myself, and from coaching agents across the U.S., I’ve seen that when we don’t have something to look forward to, a big goal we are chasing, a clear vision, or continued excitement about mastering our craft, we tend to drift.

We lose focus. Our energy drops. We start questioning everything. Sometimes we find ourselves in a rut.

Maybe it results in a loss of production. Maybe you put on those extra pounds. Or maybe you’re simply waking up every day and going through the motions.

All of that led me to reevaluate:

What am I looking forward to?

What is keeping me excited?

Where am I coasting?

What did I stop doing that I know I should be doing?

What skill could I sharpen?

Very few people achieve true mastery in their craft because they aren’t willing to endure the repetitious boredom required to become great.

You don't master a skill by knowing it. You master it through reps.

Think about the progression:

100 reps → you stop feeling awkward
1,000 reps → you become competent
5,000 reps → patterns become obvious
10,000 reps → responses become instinctive

Michael Jordan didn’t become Michael Jordan because he only practiced spectacular dunks or game-winning shots. He became great because he was willing to repeat the fundamentals thousands and thousands of times.

Free throws. Footwork. Jump shots. Conditioning. Defensive movements.

The same things, again and again, long after they stopped being exciting.

So I have to ask:

Are you actually bored or have you stopped challenging yourself to get better?

Have you mistaken consistency for stagnation?

Are you searching for something new because you truly need a change or because doing the fundamentals over and over again stopped being exciting?

What if the next level of your life doesn’t require something new, but requires you to master what you already know?

Where have you gotten bored with the very habits that created your success?

And maybe the biggest question:

What would happen if, instead of searching for the next shiny object, you decided to become world-class at what is already working?

And this doesn’t have to be about business.

Maybe it’s your health. Your marriage. Your finances. Your faith. Maybe it’s simply becoming a better version of yourself.

Where in your life have you stopped doing the things that you know work because they became boring?

Where are you searching for something new when what you really need is to recommit to what works or to someone?

Because maybe boredom isn’t always a sign that something is wrong.

Maybe boredom is where mastery begins, where the next level of deeper happens whether it’s skills, relationships, or the better version of yourself.

You might not know me personally, but I want you to know this: My hope is that you live the biggest, most beautiful life possible. That you build the confidence and faith to pull you through anything life throws your way. That you love deeply, learn joy & happiness are a choice, know you are loved, and one day leave this world knowing you had one hell of a good life.

Your friend,
Tara
